Job Description:  Skipper / Captain / Master

The captain controls the operation of the vessel when underway and commands the crew.   The skipper oversees navigation, manages, and supervises the operation of the vessel at sea, in port and at anchor.  The skipper consults weather forecasts, makes a voyage plan, and conducts equipment and inventory inspections in preparation of the vessel leaving port.   The skipper also oversees and conducts routine engineering duties.

The Ship’s Captain may perform the following tasks: 

  •  Control and direct the ship during berthing and mooring. 
  •  Plan navigation according to relevant rules and regulations, allowing for possible emergencies during the voyage. 
  • Ensure safety regulations are followed. 
  • Oversee the receipt and transmission of information by radio and telephone.
  • Ensure the ship runs safely, efficiently, and economically. 
  • Monitor and maintain procedures for fire hazard, abandon ship, and damage control requirements. 
  • Record in necessary notations in the daily logbook. 
  • Coordinate cargo loading and discharge operations. 
  • Oversee and assist in maintenance activities and requirements. 
  • Keep watch from the bridge in watches (shifts) while at sea. 
  • Determine the position of the ship relative to other vessels and obstructions. 
  • Assist with lines while berthing and conducting towing operations.
  • Assist deck crew with routine maintenance and cleaning. 
  • Assist and instruct guests with safety and familiarization briefings.
  • Assist guests and crew with setting and pulling crab and shrimp pots.
  • Provide medical and/or first aid treatment for guests and crew. 
  • Conduct routine and periodic maintenance on the vessel.
  • Assist crew with routine and periodic maintenance of vessel.
  • Assist crew in refueling operations.
  • Assist the crew with fish handling as needed.

Daily activities include obtaining weather briefings, assisting management in planning the day’s itinerary, assisting with loading and off loading skiffs, providing information to guests (i.e. sightseeing of whales, bears, sea lions, glaciers and icebergs) while at anchor and underway.  Occasionally the skipper will assist in the handling of pots, lines, fish, fish cleaning equipment and winches, and hospitality services such as assisting guests with the operation of skiffs and kayaks, and explaining the flora and fauna of Southeast Alaska.   Captains and skippers work in all types of weather conditions and spend long periods living aboard the vessel.  Conditions can be cramped, and may be required to work odd hours. Shifts could be several hours of work, followed by time off, then several more hours of work.

A Captain / skipper’s daily duties will vary greatly.  A typical day might include:  

  • 6:00 a.m.  Generator startup/wakeup call.  Assist guides with maneuvering and fueling guide boats for the day, check weather, discuss and coordinate plans for the day with skippers and crew.  
  • 8:00a.m. Assist in loading guests and gear in guide boats, handle lines for embarking guide boats.   
  • Daytime.   Relocate vessel to pre-determined anchorage, conduct routine or required maintenance and repairs to vessel and equipment, set anchor, assist crew in off loading skiffs as required.  Supervise deck crew’s routine tasks. Free time.
  • 5:00 p.m.  Assist crew with lines and disembarking guests, and off load fish. Assist guests with photos of fish, cut and fillet fish, assist deck hand with packing fish, clean up packing area. Assist crew and guests with setting crab and shrimp pots as required. 
  • 7:00 p.m.  Enjoy dinner with guests.
  • After dinner, assist guests with kayaks or guest skiff operation as needed.  On occasion, assist or direct guests with trips to shore for stream fishing.  Free Time.

Personal Requirements:

  • Possession of Master of Inland Waters, 125 Gross Tons minimum.
  • Possession of valid Alaska fishing and Alaska sport fishing guide licenses.
  • Possession of current CPR and First Aid card.
  • Willingness to spend time aboard ship in remote locations for up to six months. 
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug test and subsequent random drug tests.
  • Experience and ability in handling a vessel over 100 tons.
  • Experience and aptitude in vessel engineering, maintenance and repair.
  • Experience with diesel engines, generators, and computers.
  • Responsibility and punctuality.
  • Physical fitness, including the ability to lift 50 pounds. 
  • Knowledge of safety procedures.

Skipper/Fishing Guide

Skippers navigate and supervise the safe operation of guide boats and skiffs, share watch duty while at sea, in port, and at anchor.  Skippers assist the captain and deck crew with routine maintenance, cargo stowage, and loading and unloading operations.  They coordinate the daily guided fishing and sightseeing activities of the guests and are responsible for their enjoyment and safety.  

Skipper / Fishing Guides may be required to perform the following tasks: 

  •  Keep watch from the bridge in watches (shifts) while at sea. 
  •  Determine the position of the ship and other vessels and obstructions. 
  •  Handle lines while berthing and conducting towing operations.
  •  Assist captain and deck crew with routine maintenance and cleaning. 
  •  Assist and instruct guests with sport fishing for salmon and bottom fish.
  •  Assist guests and crew with setting and pulling crab and shrimp pots.
  •  Provide medical and/or first aid treatment for guests and crew. 
  •  Ability to follow and enforce safety regulations and rules. 
  •  Record all required data in the ADFG saltwater charter boat logbook daily.
  •  Assist with cargo loading and discharge operations and maintenance. 
  •  Conduct routine and periodic maintenance on guide boats.
  •  Assist crew with routine and periodic maintenance of vessel.
  • Assist crew in refueling operations.
  • Clean and process fish for guests each day upon return to vessel.
  • Maintain, care for and rig all necessary tackle and equipment.

Daily activities include guiding up to four guests fishing, including trolling for salmon and jigging for halibut and other bottom fish.  Guided sightseeing of whales, bears, sea lions, glaciers and icebergs will be performed in tandem with fishing and separately.  Most days require the handling of pots, lines, fish, fish cleaning equipment and winches. Hospitality services such as assisting guests with the operation of fishing equipment, explaining the flora and fauna of Southeast Alaska. Skippers/Guides work in all types of weather conditions and spend long periods living aboard the vessel.  Conditions can be cramped, and skippers/guides may be required to work odd hours. Shifts could be several hours of work, followed by time off, then several more hours of work. 

A skipper/fishing guide’s daily duties will vary greatly.  A typical day might include:  

  • 6:00 a.m.  Generator startup/wakeup call.  Organize guide boats for the day, check weather, prepare bait, tackle, drinks, fuel, check oil, water filters, electronics, discuss plans for the day with skippers/crew.  On occasion shrimp and crab pots may be pulled before breakfast.
  • 7:00am breakfast.
  • 8:00am  Load guests and gear in guide boats, handle lines for embarking guide boats.   
  • Day time   Fish and sight see as per daily plan, guest’s wishes and weather conditions.
  • 5:00pm  Return to Perseverance, assist with lines and disembarking guests, off load fish, assist guests with photo ops of fish,  cut and fillet fish, assist deck hand with  packing fish, clean up packing area. Clean and organize guide boats.  Assist guests with setting crab and shrimp pots, some days pots will be set before 5pm other days after dinner depending on circumstances. 
  • 7:00pm Enjoy dinner
  • After dinner, assist guests with kayaks or guest skiff operation as needed.  On occasion assist or direct guests with trips to shore for stream fishing.  Free Time.

  • Possession of USCG OUPV or Master of inland waters.
  • Possession of valid Alaska fishing and Alaska sport fishing guide licenses.

Mate/Deckhand/Guide-Trainee

Mate / Deckhand / Guide-Trainee will undertake a wide range of work on land and at sea, including cleaning, communications, supply, seamanship, hospitality, and stores organization and will be required to safely use equipment such as:  generators, pressure washers, cranes, winches, lines, outboard motors, and hand tools.   

Guide-trainees will exercise good judgment and demonstrate good boat-handling skills, operate guide boats and all things associated such as fishing tackle, electronics, and fish cleaning equipment according to safety, legal and company regulations.   Guide-Trainees  will demonstrate knowledge applicable to navigation and fishing techniques in Southeast Alaska in addition to good guest relations and customer service skills, must maintain a minimum of an OUPV or Masters License on inland waters, hold an Alaska fishing license and Alaska sport fishing guide license, current CPR and First Aid card, and pass random drug screening.

 The Mate/Deckhand/Guide-Trainee may be required to perform the following tasks: 

  •  Communicate into, out of, and around ship, using VHF and satellite equipment. 
  •  Stand watch while underway and at anchor.
  •  Provide hospitality services such as: rain gear assignment, baggage handling, table preparation, bed stripping, laundry, bar services and cabin care for guests. 
  •  Handle lines, buoys, anchors, poles, fish boxes, crab and shrimp pots. 
  •  Clean, process, preserve and package fish, crab, shrimp.
  •  Load, unload and stow supplies and equipment. 
  • Lift 100 lbs.
  • Operate outboard motors, electronics, guide boats and skiffs. 
  • Operate winches and other deck equipment. 
  • Assist captain with vessel(s) maintenance.
  • Wash, scrub, clean and organize decks.
  • Assist guests as they embark and disembark the vessel.
  • Attend to various tasks as required by the captain in the operation of the vessel(s).
  • Assist crew with refueling operations

The Mate/Deckhand/Guide-Trainee daily duties will vary greatly. A typical day will include:  

  • 6:00a.m. - Start 30 kw genset, change over electric power from night genset.  Check decks, wash down exhaust residue, clean and organize decks from previous night’s activities, assist guides with refueling, restock beverage fridge and day coolers, empty trash bins.  (Occasionally shrimp and crab pots will be pulled before breakfast.)
  • 7:00 a.m. - Breakfast.
  • 8:00 a.m. - Assist guides in loading guests and gear in guide boats, handle lines for embarking guide boats.  Assist chef in seafood or fish prep for galley.  
  • Mid- morning - Assist captain with crane-loading guest skiffs.  Assist with hauling anchor.  Rinse mud from and secure decks before getting underway.  Complete or assist captain with maintenance duties or repair.
  • Underway - Complete deck, organizational, and maintenance items.  Switch generators as required.  (3-5 hours average cruise time each day). Free time.
  • Mooring - Assist captain in setting anchor and preparing guest skiffs for off- loading.  Off- load skiffs as required.  Prepare fish processing equipment, bags, and freezers. Sharpen fillet knives.  Free time.
  • 5:00 p.m. - Assist guides with lines and disembarking guests. Off- load fish. Assist guides with fish cutting.  Wash fish fillets and operate vacuum packer, label and pack fish.  Load packed fish into freezers and clean up packing area.
  • 7:00 p.m. – Enjoy Dinner
  • After dinner - Assist guests with kayaks, skiff, and radio operation.  Free time.
  • 9:00 p.m. - Switch to night generator, set electric for night operations, shut down 30 kw genset.

Deck hands work in all types of weather conditions and spend long periods living aboard the vessel.  Conditions can be cramped, and deck hands may be required to work odd hours. Shifts could be several hours of work, followed by time off, then several more hours of work.

Chef

The Chef will plan menus utilizing the freshest ingredients available, coordinate the ordering and delivery of food or select, organize, and manage the procurement of food stores.  Prepare, cook, and serve meals aboard the vessel while maintaining strict sanitation standards. 

The chef may be required to perform the following tasks:  

  •  Plan menus and budgets together with management 
  •  Order food, kitchen supplies and equipment 
  •  Organize the galley and storage areas 
  •  Prepare and cook food 
  •  Plate, garnish, and serve food 
  •  Clean dining areas, tableware, serving dishes and utensils after each meal
  •  Clean galley equipment and cooking surfaces 
  •  Monitor propane for grill and coordinate its procurement
  •  Explain and enforce sanitation regulations 
  •  Freeze and preserve foods
  •  Ensure that all menus are constantly updated, according to seasonal availability 
  •  Ensure that all menus are correctly calculated to budgetary controls
  •  Ensure that all meals are served in healthy portions
  •  Ensure meals are served in a timely manner with a pleasing presentation  
  •  Communicate with Manager to ensure requests are properly handled 
  • Ensure that all galley, cooking, and storage areas satisfy the most stringent sanitation requirements
  • Dress properly to satisfy management and enhance the image of the establishment 
  • Ensure that all stocks are ordered to the correct quantities, quality and price 
  • Ensure that all stocks are kept securely and under the correct conditions  
  • Conduct regular stock checks/stock inventory
  • Ensure information required to compile meaningful budgets is always available 

Daily activities include:   planning and preparing hot breakfasts, box lunches, appetizers, and dinner, including desserts for 8 guests and 6 crew.  (The same or similar meals will be served to guests and crew.)  Meals will showcase a Northwest-style cuisine with a focus on fresh seafood and fish, specifically salmon, halibut, rockfish, Dungeness crab, shrimp and clams.  At least one dinner service per week featuring beef such as grilled rib-eye steak should be considered.  The chef will be required to work in all types of weather conditions and spend up to six months living aboard the vessel.  Conditions can be cramped, and the chef may be required to work odd hours. Shifts could consist of several hours of work, a break of several hours, followed by several more hours of work. 

The chef’s daily duties vary greatly.  A typical day might include:  

  • 5:00 a.m. – 6:00 a.m. (or as required) - Wake/begin breakfast and lunch prep. 
  • 6:00 a.m (or as required) - Main generator start to supply galley with electricity.
  • 7:00-8:00 a.m. Serve breakfast.
  • 8:00 a.m.  Distribute lunches to guests departing for activities aboard guide boats.
  • 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. - Prepare food for appetizers and dinner. (Direct or assist deck crew in cleaning shrimp, crab, clams and fish for galley use.)  Free time.
  • 5:00 p.m. – (guests return to vessel) Serve appetizers.
  • 7:00 p.m. – Serve dinner 
  • After dinner - Wash dishes, clean galley and dining areas, store leftover foods, and prepare as required for next day.
  • 9:00 p.m. or earlier - Finish all galley activities requiring main generator.
